Dutch Cyclists Plot GPS

Posted by chdot on July 28, 2006

While British motorists seem to be going Sat Nav mad, Dutch cyclists have been recording cycle routes and putting them on the web where they can be seen as a map and also downloaded for use on personal GPS devices.

Perhaps Spokes volunteers could do something similar as a useful addition to their excellent map.

The Council has an interesting on-line mapping project geoshare.org.uk. This has layers for various things including school catchment areas and bike paths (but only the main ones).

Anything to encourage people to cycle and find ‘hard to find’ routes away from main roads must be a good idea.

I am looking to do something similar based on the Spokes Edinburgh Map, however I don’t have any information on the type of grid references used or how they relate to latitude/longitude co-ordinates. Without this information, the only way I can see of doing this would be to cycle all the routes and record the tracks with a GPS unit.
