Edinburgh gets Bike Mounted Police

Posted by chdot on August 7, 2006

Bobbies on bicycles is a traditional image of past times, but cops on Mountain Bikes have been a successful part of law enforcement in many parts of the world for a while.

Strathclyde Police has had them for several years and now Lothian and Borders has caught up with idea. Edinburgh has a team of 18 who will be visible (and no doubt successful) in the city centre. At present the cyclists (trained by Cycling Scotland) will operate during the day. The officers are normally part of the ‘Events’ team. In the future it is expected that they will also be an early hours presence in places like the Meadows. Eventually cycling police should become visible away from Central Edinburgh.

Two of them are pictured taking part in yesterday’s Evening News Cavalcade.
