Edinburgh figures in three of the twelve 2006 ATOC National Cycle-Rail Awards announced today.

The Association of Train Operating Companies’ National Cycle-Rail Awards “recognise the progress made by the rail industry and associated organisations towards encouraging the integrated use of bikes and train travel.”

First ScotRail is the Customer Service Excellence Winner for its work in providing eight bikes spaces (see photo) on its busy (and popular for cyclists) North Berwick route. This has resulted in “a significant take up of the cycle spaces.”

Additionally First ScotRail has been crowned “Train Operator of the Year”.

“First ScotRail has clearly and consistently demonstrated an all round commitment to encouraging the integrated use of cycles and trains. It has used imaginative and innovative means of getting people out of their cars and has many members of staff who are clearly driven by the desire to offer excellent customer service.”

One factor that impressed the judges was that ScotRail had been “nominated in many categories by individual people and by user groups and were clearly going in the right direction.”

Last, but far from least, the “People Award” (don’t forget this is a UK wide competition) went to Edinburgh Waverley Station Manager Juliet Donnachie.

This is a worthy recognition of her work over the last three years which made it possible for The Bike Station to exist and grow in the basement of the station. It has recently expanded to new premises in Causewayside but still has a presence in the Station. (Juliet has pledged to continue to provide support.)

She also actively supported the provision of a cyclists’ notice board (by the cycle racks on Platform 11), and encouraged individuals and other companies to help The Bike Station with volunteers and materials.

Once again, proof that Edinburgh is a significant ‘cycling city’.
