Suggestion for Saturday

Why not take a trip to Balerno for the monthly (second Saturday) Farmers’ Market – 9.30 – 1.30.

Best way to get there is up the Water of Leith Walkway railway path. This leaves the Union Canal at Slateford, so there’s a traffic free route all the way from Tollcross, (experience the newly laid tarmac from Harrison Park), to Balerno High School and then a short on-road section to the High Street.

Unfortunately the section to the tunnel at Colinton is currently quite muddy (photo) – made worse by vehicles involved in the (overdue) tree management work. Perhaps the Council or its contractors will send a bulldozer along to remove several years of accumulated mud and leaf mould.

Some years ago it was planned to tarmac this path as part of the Water of Leith Millennium project. Sustrans offered to pay, but unfortunately objectors wanting to ‘retain the rural feeling’ prevailed. Currently the Council doesn’t regard this route as a priority (for the foreseeable future) – in spite of the increasing number of houses being built (and more planned) along the WoL corridor.

Bike Week Registration Goes Live

Posted by chdot on March 8, 2007

The UK National Bike Week registration database is now LIVE.

Register your ‘bike week’ event – if it’s between 1st of April and Bike Week proper (16 and 24 June 2007). As long as they will “enable more people to participate in Bike Week and Bike2Work, such as ‘Dr Bike’ free cycle safety checks, cycling skills training, rides for novices, etc.” they will be covered by public liability insurance.

It’s likely that this year Edinburgh will see more Bike Week activity than any previous year. Edinburgh has its own Bike Week web site (bikeweekedinburgh.info) to highlight, promote and encourage more cycling.

The EdinburghPaths.info web site which highlighted the Exploring Edinburgh articles and leaflets has been updated.

In addition to the original content, a large number of new routes have been added taking advantage of online plotting software and Google Maps and satellite images.
