Spot the Difference

TODAY

The Council’s web site now has the ‘recommended routes’ for bikes just ONE click from the front page.

Cyclists

There are some differences between the diversion routes recommended for general traffic and for cyclists:

East to West

Cyclists travelling in this direction are not permitted to use the West Approach Road west of Canning Street. Therefore it is recommended that, instead of following the diversion route for general traffic, cyclists should turn right from Lothian Road in to Rutland Street. You can then continue through Rutland Square, turn left on to Canning Street and then immediately right in to Atholl Crescent Lane. This will lead you to the western end of Shandwick Place. You will need to dismount and walk your bike for the last section to Manor Place/Atholl Place.

West to East

Cyclists travelling towards Princes Street are recommended to use the diversion route for general traffic along Manor Place and Melville Street. At the end of Melville Street it is possible to take a shortcut by proceeding straight across to Randolph Place and through the passage to the North of West Register House which will bring you to Charlotte Square. Cyclists travelling towards the south side of Princes Street (Lothian Road) have the option of using Torphichen Street, Canning Street and the West Approach Road (legal for cyclists east of Canning Street).

FRIDAY

The Council’s web site now has the ‘recommended routes’ for bikes (for avoiding the five month Shandwick Place closure). The page (4 clicks from the initial page) was updated on Friday.

Perhaps the cones will get moved to form a proper/safe right turn for cyclists sometime.

I remember TIE laughed when we said they should sort out cycle routes before tram works…

I filled in my postcard about TIE work with comment about lack of cycling provision in the paperwork that was posted.

I’m still waiting for a reply.
